Some of you may have already heard, but Samsung has announced it's first 32g Solid State Disk (SSD) for $600. I've always been keeping an eye on SS Flash Memory technology and such because I always wondered when the hell we were going to drop our clunky spinning drives for a non-moving disk that just needs power. The mobile devices are going to get their hands on this technology first. PDAs, Laptops, etc. It won't be too long before it'll find way into our PCs. Only concern that I've seen with SSD is that solid state technology has r/w limitations... your flash memory for your camera, your thumbdrive, all those have a lifespan. I've been doing some research and found out that the lifespan is about ~10 years. When was the last time you used a regular ATA drive beyond 8 years? As long as the consumes can keep upgrading their disks every 6-8 years, I don't think it's going to matter.
What's bigger news... the first consumer available terrabyte drive or this? I'd bank my money on SSD drives. It's the only thing, besides space, that is preventing everyone from getting a laptop as a personal computer. You get a laptop for mobility, you don't get one for stability. You get a PC for that and you park it in one spot and that provides stability. If you had a laptop that offered mobility and stability, then... the picture suddenly starts to change and the only thing you're really nitpicking about is the fact that you just burned the top layer of skin off the top of your lap.
Actually developing your own 'admin portal' can be somewhat of a pain. For 4-5 years, I've had 2 versions of an administrative portal developed for this company. The administrative portal allows clients to log in and update their existing websites by adding news, events, etc. So, I have 5-6 years of feedback and ideas to try to make the new admin portal bigger and better than ever. So far, my progress has been slow, but steady going. I have double the flexibility that I've never had in the past due to application server upgrades, more coding knowledge and better (internal/external) client information.
The problem lies in "doing the right thing" which becomes an argument of application server performance vs. database performance. Which is better to tax? Do you tax the application by putting a little additional information into memory and give the db server a rest or do you tax the db server by doing constant queries and give the application server a break?
One might think that it depends on our resources available and I can tell you that I have moderate resources available to me. I have admin access to majority of the boxes to get the job done. At the same time, I know that this application is going to be re-deployed at least 20-50 times over every year. So, when you build one administrative portal, whether it's memory heavy or db heavy, then you have to keep in mind that if you're taking 10 megs of information for one site, then 20-50 sites later, you're now taking 200-500 megs of information or doing ten-fold the amount of queries you thought you were normally doing if the sites were used to their full capacity.
The decision appears to be mine to decide what to do and I just want to do the right thing. I've interviewed the project manager, database administrator and server administrators trying to research. I've given them all scenarios. The server/db admins both chime, "We can take it. It's an administrative portal, there's only going to be x-amount of users logged in at once." Yet, I have something in the back of my head nagging me that I can't forsee what kind of client projects that I'm going to be building and I shouldn't assume that it's going to be x-amount of users at once.
So, in between a rock and a hard place.
Windows, Mac, Linux - What's your preference and why?

All of the above. I try to keep abreast on the latest technology for all of them. Currently at home, I'm running Solaris 10 (something I've never tried before - Previous iteration was Fedora Core) for my web/ftp/mail server. Along with it, Win XP Pro for gaming (maybe someday Vista when it gets launched - not quite brave enough to install the beta cd I have). I'd like to get an Apple Laptop someday, but that'll be awhile.
It's semi-frustrating to keep up with all the computer issues that arises, but worth it in terms of learning new systems.
What song or lyrics are stuck in your head at the moment? What album is it from?

Tool - Reflection
I'm having a couple of issues with my dog, Zoe. A lab/pit bull (which, I didn't really want the pit bull breed, but I'm stuck with it now) the mix sure makes for an interesting breed. Very strong, very agile and overall, I think when she matures, she's going to be an awesome dog.
The issues I'm having with her right now are:
- She has gotten a little more vocal than I'd like. While our neighborhood is full of dogs, unfortunately, there are people around/nearby me that don't like dogs as Zoe was reported for "Excessive Barking." Any suggestions?
- She's jumping up on people. The trainer I went to suggested either squeezing their paws slightly or using your knees to block them a little or stepping backwards away from them. All of them aren't working and my girlfriend / her kids are getting a little annoyed.
- Mouthing. For me, I don't mind this so much, but my girlfriend and the kids, she needs to stop. I try distracting her with a bone, she still does it. She ocassionally snaps at the boys, but she usually never lands a bite (and, if she does it's more dramatic than painful - tho, occasionally she gets riled up by the boys or gets a little too playful).
Who's your favorite movie villain?
Well, it was Riddick in Pitch Black, but made him a hero at the end. I'm a big movie freak, so this is actually a hard question to answer as there's too many to choose from. Which genre? :P
Well, my linux box (which hosts my personal website, mail, etc) at home is on its last leg. The /home directory is completely corrupted. I could probably salvage databases from the /, but the rest of it is hosed. I'll probably get a new machine up and running soon with new harddrives, but I'm considering kicking everyone off my box. I did it as a favor and no one is tossing me any money or anything. However, now, I'm beginning to get slightly annoyed at (some, not all) emails I'm getting asking "wtf?!" If you want serious hosting then get a serious host because it's obvious that I'm not. It's a computer that sits on the floor of my basement. How serious is that? :P
I'm considering nuking linux from the next revision of the server and just installing windows and the appropriate programs needed. I'm just tired of not really know what I need to do to fix issues. If I install windows, sure I'll have to reboot it every now and then, but it's a whole lot less troublesome to maintain and, I'm 100% certain that I can lock down the box once I get m0n0wall in place.
Anyway, I don't know what I'm doing yet. I mentioned a windows server to my girlfriend and got an audible gasp with a poke in the side and a "Don't you dare." It's fun dating a geekgrrl. :)
Do you have any tattoos? If not, if you were going to get inked, what would you get?
Yes on my right arm. High enough that a short sleeve shirt will hide it. I have stylized tribal lines going around my arm in a single line with an ankh in the middle of my arm (read: Like this: ------- ankh -------- ). When anyone asks what I believe in, I just answer that I believe in life. Life is what you make of it.
I'm considering getting another tattoo, but I don't know yet.
So my only complaints about Vox so far is the ad banners. I'd like to remove them and would pay money too. I realize that Vox is in beta at the moment, but I do wonder if they have this planned. I searched the knowledgebase and they said that there's no way to remove them yet. Time will tell I guess. In the meantime, I'll be bouncing back and forth between LJ and this.
I do like the composition editor and the AJAX (?) tools that they have implemented though.
This is my dog Zoe. I adopted her from the local humane society back in Feb 2006. She was 6-7 months old then, I'm guessing 13 months old now. She is a very intelligent and a very high energy dog. Probably will continue to be high energy for a few years.
Might be a little too much energy for me, but luckily... my girlfriend is moving in with me soon and she has 2 kids. I figure they can wear each other out while my girlfriend and I watch. Well, at least... that's the plan. More than likely, we'll be running after the three of them - Don't touch that. Put that down. Am I right? :)
Anyway, just testing out the photos and stuff. Woof.
